Vortex Fields (2024)

Bb trumpet, Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense Rev2, Yamaha Silent Brass mute, MaxMSP

For the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physics and Astronomy Artist in Residence program

Inspired by recent research on light's tendency to array itself into choreographed vortices at the femtometric scale, Vortex Fields offers a sonic interpretation of light's movement across surfaces. Utilizing electronically augmented trumpet and motion tracking hardware, it incorporates physicality through flow, velocity, directionality, and intensity.

This work contemplates the idea that if light can dance, it can be reimagined in music—both heard and seen. Vortex Fields seeks to explore the common ground between time and tempo, and light and sound.
