Big Band Music (2023)

Any combination of SATB mixed instruments (scaled up 4 at a time, no maximum)

for University of Pittsburgh Composer Performer Collective

Big Band Music is a piece for another assemblage of one soprano instrument, one alto instrument, one tenor instrument, and one baritone instrument, but it works best if you include at least one partner for each (SSAATTBB) and can easily scale upward (3xSATB, 4xSATB, etc.).

Exploring the sound world of the isolated commercial lead trumpet player, Big Band Music puts a spotlight on the rigor, leadership, and loneliness faced by the contemporary lead player and the musical demands placed on them by various actors of, and needs within, the greater music industry. Not intending to necessarily put performers through the ringer, the piece instead wants players and listeners to get a glimpse of the world lead players travel in, ultimately calling for empathy towards the workhorses of our business.
